This practical course includes library preparation starting from genomic DNA, followed by sequencing runs on a bench top sequencer Miseq for whole genome sequencing (WGS) of bacteria and 16S metagenome sequencing. Analyses of the resulting data will cover pre-processing, alignment, variant calling and several quality control checkpoints. In regards to metagenomics, methods of taxonomic assignment and clustering of targeted gene data will be covered. By the end of this course participants will be able to make informed decisions about which technology and workflow to be applied to solve specific next generation sequencing research questions.
